Under the IDEA, you have the right to resolve disputes with your school district through due process. Simply stated, special education due process is a formal legal process to resolve these disputes.
Before invoking due process, depending on your circumstances, you may try to resolve the dispute through informal means. For example, you might discuss the problem with your child's teacher or school principal, or you might request an IEP team meeting to discuss your concerns. Please note, that you are not obligated to engage in informal negotiations, but sometimes they may resolve a problem.
